The supreme Court of Cassation on
Friday rejected prosecutors' request for a European arrest
warrant for a 76-year-old German who is accused of helping
disappear an Italo-Chilean photographer and leftist activist
under the Pinochet regime in 1976.
Juan Maino Canales, 27, was abducted with two fellow MAPU
militants on May 26, 1976 by agents of the Dirección de
Inteligencia Nacional (DINA) and disappeared.
The German, Reinardh Doring Falkenberg, was arrested in the
upscale Tuscan resort town of Forte dei Marmi on September 22
but then allowed to return to Germany on November 22.
An extradition request from Chile arrived too late and he was
left out of jail on health grounds.
The Cassation Court on Friday ruled he could not be arrested in
his home town of Gronau, in North Rhine-Westphalia.
