Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni had an
audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican on Tuesday.
The meeting lasted 35 minutes.
Meloni went to the Vatican with her partner, Andrea Giambruno,
and her young daughter Ginevra.
Meloni also met Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin,
accompanied by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Secretary
for Relations with States and International Organizations.
"During the cordial discussions, which took place in the
Secretariat of State, the good bilateral relations were
highlighted and a number of issues relating to the Italian
social situation were mentioned, with particular reference to
the problems associated with the fight against poverty, the
family, the demographic phenomenon and the education of young
people," the Vatican said.
"Attention then turned to themes of an international character,
with special reference to Europe, the conflict in Ukraine, and
migration".
Meloni gave the pope a 1955 edition of Maria Montessori's Mass
Explained to Children.
The pope gave a Meloni a bronze work depicting a child helping
another to get up entitled 'Social Love' and some documents,
including his message for the 2023 World Day of Peace.
Meloni, 45, was sworn in as Italy's first woman premier in
October after her Brothers of Italy (FdI) party led a right-wing
alliance to victory in September's general election.
