President Sergio Mattarella was in
"stable" condition on Wednesday after undergoing surgery at
Rome's Santo Spirito hospital late on Tuesday to insert a
pacemaker, sources said.
The head of state had the operation at 8pm on Tuesday after
completing his scheduled engagements for the day.
He then had a quiet night in the hospital's cardiology
department and does not have any symptoms following the
operation, the sources said.
Mattarella's office stressed that the surgery was planned and
was no cause for concern.
Tuesday's news that the president had been admitted to hospital
was met with get-well-soon wishes from politicians of all
colours, including Premier Giorgia Meloni.
"My warmest wishes to President Mattarella for a speedy and full
recovery," Meloni said on social media.
"Italy awaits you soon, with the same strength and dedication of
always".
