A trial has been set for May 12 for
three climate activists arrested Monday after throwing paint
over the front of the Senate house in Rome, judicial sources
said Tuesday.
A judge upheld the arrest warrants for the three members of the
Ultima Generazione (UG, Last Generation) group - Davide Nensi,
Alessandro Sulis and Laura Paracini - and ordered their release
ahead of the trial.
They have been charged with aggravated damage.
A prosecutors' request for ordering them to stay in Rome and
report to police there was denied.
The protest was condemned as an unacceptable act of vandalism.
UG have been the protagonists of other such protests including
splashing paint at the entrance to La Scala and sticking
themselves to Botticelli's Spring at the Uffizi and the Laocoon
statue in the Vatican, as well as blocking the Mt Blanc Tunnel,
throwing flour over an Andy Warhol car in Milan, and throwing
soup onto a Van Gogh in Rome.
They have also blocked traffic on Rome's ring road on several
occasions.
