(supersedes previous)A
government measure scrapping fines and interest on tax arrears
will halve the amount owed by late payers, Junior Economy
Minister Enrico Zanetti said Thursday.
The measure contained in a tax decree linked to the
government's 2017 budget is part of the scrapping of the widely
despised Equitalia tax collection agency.
The tax arrears collection system has been "more ferocious
than efficient for too many years," Zanetti told parliament.
The decree says taxpayers with outstanding debts can pay
what they owe in five installments, with 70% of the total
payable by the end of 2017 and the remaining 30% by September
2018.
Payment of the first instalment will void any orders for
the garnishment or seizure of assets and real estate.
These measures should generate a 1.4-billion-euro tax take
over the next two years, with 300 million in 2017 and 1.1
billion in 2018.
The decree was initially expected to generate revenue of
two billion euros.
