Italy expects the ongoing
rapprochement between the United States and Cuba to lead to an
end to the US embargo on the Caribbean country, Foreign Minister
Paolo Gentiloni said Thursday.
"We hope the process of normalisation between Cuba and the
United States goes ahead and brings about the end of the
embargo, which must be the natural consequence of this political
decision," he told his Cuban counterpart Bruno
Rodriguez Parilla.
Gentiloni also voiced the hope that Cuban reforms will
boost economic cooperation with Italy in the fields of small and
medium-sized businesses, cooperatives, tourism and renewable
energy.
The normalisation between the former foes is set to
continue with the restoration of direct phone lines.
