Italian lawmakers on Tuesday
elected Paola Balducci and Pierantonio Zanettin to fill two
remaining vacancies on the Italian judiciary's self-governing
body, the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM), parliamentary
sources said.
Also on Tuesday, Italian lawmakers again failed to fill two
vacancies on the country's 15-member Constitutional Court in a
vote at a joint session of the two houses of parliament, ANSA
sources said.
MPs followed party whip indications to turn in 655 blank
ballots out of 848 votes.
The premier's Democratic Party (PD), ex-premier Silvio
Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI) party, the anti-establishment
5-Star Movement, the minority New Center Right (NCD) party, and
the anti-immigrant, separatist Northern League had all called
for blank ballots.
The quorum to elect Constitutional Court judges is of 570
votes, or three-fifths of parliament in joint session.
The impasse in filling the posts means a delay in
implementing crucial reforms proposed by Premier Matteo Renzi.
Another vote, the 15th, will now have to take place.
