A tribute to Andrea Camilleri, on the centenary of the birth of the writer and literary father of the Inspector Montalbano, and a short film competition are two of the interesting proposals of the eighth edition of the Malaga Italian Film Festival, organised by the Dante Alighieri Society under the patronage of the Italian Embassy in Spain.
With the same philosophy already expressed in previous years, the edition of FCIMALAGA 2025 will present, from 15 to 24 May, topical films that have enjoyed considerable success in previews in Italy, as well as internationally. The proposal of this eighth edition brings together the experience of established directors, such as Ferzan Özpetek, Rocco Mortelliti and Francesco Costabile, with new talents who are approaching directing, such as Neri Marcorè, Violetta Rovetto and Margherita Vicario, the Dante Alighieri Association of Malaga points out in a statement. Overall, this is an extraordinary representation of the plurality and diversity of contemporary Italian cinema through eight films.
On the occasion of the centenary of Andrea Camilleri's birth, the Festival will pay tribute to the work of one of the most influential Italian authors of the 20th century, who is also well known and appreciated in Spain, where he has been translated and studied. A literary author, father of Inspector Montalbano, but also an appreciated theatre director and television author, the figure of Camilleri will be analysed by researchers from Italy, Spain, Mexico and Brazil, who will participate in the first homage dedicated to Camilleri in Spain.
Three films, taken from Camilleri's works, will be screened on 15 and 16 May: 'La mossa del cavallo' by Gianluca Maria Tavarelli; 'La scomparsa di Pató' by Rocco Mortelliti; and 'La concessione del telefono' by Roan Johnson. It will also be possible to listen to Camilleri's words thanks to an interview produced by RAI in 2019, a few months before the writer's death, made available by the Dante Alighieri Society of Rome, exclusively for Spain. The three films based on Camilleri's works will be free admission, subject to availability.
This is also an academic activity, aimed above all at young readers and students of Italian: the translation and creation of the subtitles for these films were carried out by a group of researchers from the University of Málaga and the Dante Alighieri Society, directed by Professor Giovanni Caprara.
