During a mission to Colombia that began on 14 April, the Director General for Political and Security Affairs of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Pasquale Ferrara, held talks at the Colombian Foreign Ministry with the Minister in charge and Director for Multilateral Political Affairs, Amb. Adriana del Rosario Mendoza, the Deputy Minister in charge of Multilateral Affairs, Amb. Diana Mejia, and the Director in charge of International Legal Affairs, Dr. Sergio Diaz.
The meetings, reads a note, provided an opportunity to confirm the full convergence of views between the two countries on their commitment to multilateralism. In this context, the importance of multilateral fora, first and foremost the United Nations, as forums for cooperation between states to address global challenges and build a more equitable, peaceful and just world was also reaffirmed.
The two countries also reaffirmed their full adherence to the principles and values of the UN Charter, as well as the need to adopt a reformist approach in order to make the UN and multilateral institutions more effective, democratic and less bureaucratic.
The meetings also confirmed the full agreement between the two countries on Security Council reform. Italy and Colombia are both members of the Uniting for Consensus Group, which has put forward a reform proposal aimed at strengthening the Council's representativeness and efficiency by increasing its elective membership.
