On the occasion of the 9th edition of the Day of Italian Design in the World, entitled 'Inequalities. Design for a better life', the Italian Embassy in the Dominican Republic organised a series of conferences with the participation of the testimonial of the Association for Industrial Design (ADI), Arch. Nina Bassoli, curator of the architecture section of the Milan Triennale.
Architect Bassoli gave a lectio magistralis at two important academic institutions in the Dominican Republic: the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo and the Universidad Central del Este (UCE) in San Pedro de Macorís.
In liaison with the contact persons of the respective universities, Prof. Jesús D'Alessandro, director of the School of Architecture at UNIBE, and Prof. Francesco Gravina, dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Art at UCE, architect Bassoli was able to illustrate to an audience of young students the salient features of her professional career as well as the peculiarities of her current role as curator.
During her presentation, she addressed the challenges of designing exhibition spaces that 'speak' about architecture, giving them a visual identity and interpreting the theme of the XXIV Triennale Exhibition, which will open in May. The lectures also encouraged a dialogue between the students and architect Bassoli on the impact of architectural works in society and their role in combating inequality, the central theme of the 2025 edition of Italian Design Day in the World. A special focus was devoted to urban regeneration opportunities in the Dominican Republic and the contribution of architecture in improving the wellbeing of communities.
Dominican students were also presented with the long history of the Triennale di Milano, retracing its milestones and highlighting its ability to interpret the transformations of society and the country. The account of the Triennale's historical role as an engine of innovation and positive change offered the opportunity to explore some of the founding values of Italian design, including the link with creativity, social commitment and the strong connection with the productive fabric of the territory.
On the sidelines of the lectures, architect Bassoli met with representatives of academic institutions to explore future possibilities for collaboration between architecture faculties and the Milan Triennale, including student exchanges and joint workshops.
