On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Embassy of Italy in Washington and the Italian Consular Network in the United States celebrated the Day of Remembrance with an articulated programme of meetings and events in major American cities, involving the various branches of Sistema Italia in the United States.
In Washington, the Embassy organised the screening of the docu-film "Liliana" by Ruggero Gabbai on the life of Senator Liliana Segre, in collaboration with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the JxJ Jewish Film and Music Festival.
After its premiere screening in the US capital, the film was then shown in Chicago and Los Angeles. "We must never forget, because forgetting means letting hatred and intolerance take root in the shadows; it means letting prejudices grow unchecked, leading us down the same path of division and violence that we vowed never to travel again: since the memory of the survivors fades with time, we are the ones who have the responsibility to ensure that their voices are never silenced," Italian Ambassador to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, stressed at the screening. In New York, the traditional commemoration took place during which the names of Jews deported from Italy and Italian territories were publicly read out. Other important events took place in Miami, where the American edition of Primo Levi's 'Complete Works' was presented, and in San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia and Houston. The common thread running through the events was the importance of memory and passing on the legacy of the Shoah to future generations.
