North American premiere at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau - on the initiative of the Italian Embassy in Canada - of the documentary 'Liliana', a work by director Ruggero Gabbai recently presented at the Rome Film Festival and centred on the figure of life Senator Liliana Segre.
In his opening speech, Ambassador Alessandro Cattaneo stressed the extraordinary ethical and civil value of Senator Segre's testimony. In this regard, the ambassador noted that the memory of the Shoah constitutes not only a moral obligation, but also an essential reference point for the defence of democratic values, in light of the link between historical memory, identity and democracy. The screening of the film was followed by a conversation with director Gabbai, moderated by Prof. Costanza Musu from the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa.
The presentation was attended by a large and prestigious audience, including representatives of the Canadian Parliament and institutions, Holocaust survivors and relatives of the victims, as well as Ambassadors from European Union countries, the G7 and Israel. The initiative follows a few days after the event organised last 27 January by the Italian Embassy at the Canadian Museum of History in collaboration with the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship in Ottawa to honour Remembrance Day, during which excerpts of the documentary were previewed.
'Liliana' will also be presented this evening in Montreal by the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute.
