The Italian Permanent Representation to NATO today organised, together with the Polish Representation, a virtual tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its liberation.
The initiative, which now forms part of the events traditionally organised by Italy at NATO to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, enabled the Allied ambassadors, with the help of a guide connected from Poland, to enter one of the most significant sites of the Nazi regime's atrocious anti-Semitic intent. "This event follows the great ceremony organised by Poland on 27 January, which was also attended by President of the Republic Mattarella," Ambassador Marco Peronaci said at the opening. "As Minister Tajani recently stated, the battle against anti-Semitism is a priority for us, translated into a new and reinforced national strategy. This year we face this anniversary with a little more hope: the ceasefire in Gaza is an opportunity that we all have a responsibility to seize and develop for a concrete plan for a just and sustainable peace".
