On the occasion of the Meeting of the Presidents of the Parliaments of Southern Europe and North Africa, held in Lanzarote from 26 to 28 January, the Italian ambassador to Madrid, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, accompanied by the vice consul to the Canary Islands, Gianluca Cappelli Bigazzi, and the consular correspondent, Alfonso Licata, met the island's main authorities and a representation of the large Italian community.
During his meetings with the President of the Lanzarote Cabildo, the President of the Province, Oswaldo Betancort, Senator Pedro San Ginés, the Insular Director of the State's General Administration, Pedro Viera, and the Mayor of the capital Arrecife, Yonathan De León, the Ambassador expressed his esteem and appreciation for Italy and its Italian citizens, who are increasingly choosing to move to the island - named after the 14th-century Genoese navigator Lanzarotto Malocello -. Lanzarotto Malocello - or stay there for tourist reasons.
The Italian community, enterprising and integrated, constitutes a vital and dynamic component of local society and contributes significantly to the economic and cultural development of Lanzarote, as was emphasised during the talks that further strengthened the embassy's friendship and collaboration with local Canary Island institutions
During the meeting with the Italian community, organised by the vice-consulate in the Canary Islands at the Seaside Los Jameos hotel in Puerto del Carmen, the ambassador emphasised to his compatriots the attention and support given to them by the Farnesina and the Italian institutions that through the embassy and the vice-consulate with its network in the archipelago, the Dante Alighieri Society and the other branches of Sistema Italia, are constantly working to support their journey and foster their integration, keeping alive the Italian identity and roots with our country.
In this vein, highlighted Ambassador Buccino Grimaldi, are the consular activities, the promotion of cultural initiatives and the negotiations started with Spain on an agreement that allows compatriots to acquire Spanish citizenship without having to renounce their Italian citizenship.
