On the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, the Ambassador of Italy to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, participated in a ceremony in remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. Together with President Zelensky, the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Ukrainian Jewish community, the Ambassador laid a votive candle at the Menorah memorial on the territory of the Babyn Yar National Historical Reserve in Kiev.
"We remember today all the victims of Nazi persecution, and the genocide of the Jewish people, whose culture has been an integral part of European history and identity for thousands of years. Ukraine was one of the main cradles of Yiddish culture and language, and it was here that the great movements of spiritual renewal of Judaism inspired by mysticism and Kabbalah were born, including Chassidism, an extraordinarily rich world that was swept away by the Nazi fury,' said Formosa.
To offer further food for thought to the public, on this day the Cultural Institute promoted and organised, together with the Embassy, a special screening of the film "This Must Be the Place", directed by Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino, at the "Zhovten" cinema in Kiev: the main character Cheyenne, played by Sean Penn, is a famous, aging rock musician who embarks on a journey to find his father's executioner, a former Nazi war criminal in hiding in the United States.
