The events and initiatives of the 2024 edition of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World (Scim), promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and organised by the embassies in each country to promote wine and food culture, Made in Italy, and Italian food and wine excellence, were inaugurated recently at Malindi and Watamu, tourist resorts on the Kenyan coast.
The opening of the week in Kenya was preceded on Friday by the launch of a campaign to promote Italian cuisine and the Mediterranean diet, on domestic flights of the Jambojet airline, at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Roberto Natali, in addition to illustrating the benefits and peculiarities of the Mediterranean diet, also dwelt on the phenomenon of Italian sounding and the proliferation of counterfeit products that damage the economy and image of our country.
The diplomat also announced that a collaboration had been started between Coldiretti's Campagna Amica foundation and the Kenyan farmers' association, to set up a fruit and vegetable market in Nairobi, making Italian experience available in Kenya.
In Malindi and Watamu, where the Italian community is present with several facilities in the tourism sector, including several Italian restaurants, the ambassador met with compatriots and institutional representatives of the coastal counties, presenting the weekly calendar of events that includes the promotion of imported Italian products in supermarkets in Watamu and Nairobi, the travelling exhibition 'Follow the Italian taste' with images of Italian food and wine on 'Tuk Tuk', popular local means of transport, a series of masterclasses held by chef and taste ambassador Luca Mastromattei, a scientific conference on the Mediterranean diet and its benefits at the Kenya Nutritionist and Dieticians Institute in Nairobi, as well as the publication of magazines and pamphlets.
