The initiatives organised by the Italian Embassy in Ecuador for the 24th Italian Language Week in the world kick off today. At the centre of the programme: the role of books as a flywheel of Italy's linguistic, cultural and value heritage. Ample emphasis will also be given to the new Ecuadorian generations, who are increasingly attracted by study and training experiences in our country.
With the art competition in the evocative spaces of the Fundación Guayasamin, more than 100 children and young people from marginalised and socially disadvantaged backgrounds will test themselves in drawing and painting, under the banner of the universal values of human rights, peace and international solidarity, interpreting the theme 'Italian and the book: the world between the lines' as they please.
There is great expectation, still among the youngest and all lovers of the Italian literary tradition, for the two meetings in the Andean capital's famous bookshops, on the 19th at Librería Española and on the 26th at Librería Rayu
on the 26th at Librería Rayuela: the entire stock of works by Italian authors, from classics to contemporary, will be on display, debating topical issues such as the importance of translations in the era of digital technologies and highlighting the vitality of the national publishing sector, with the support of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Ecuador.
There will also be a conference to promote the Italian language organised by the European Academy of Florence at the prestigious Universidad San Francisco de Quito, in collaboration with the Ecuadorian-Italian Bi-national Chamber. There were also many events organised by the Dante Alighieri committees of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca.
An intense programme calibrated to the objectives of linguistic promotion in a country, Ecuador, which according to Ambassador Giovanni Davoli "is a catchment area in strong momentum for the promotion of the Italian language, especially among the young public where there is a very strong demand linked to the flow of Ecuadorian students who look to Italy as a top destination to specialise in our university structures of excellence. The most tangible proof of this is the extraordinary success in Ecuador of the annual 'Study in Italy' scholarship programme'.
Involving economic operators in the celebrations of the Week, added the Ambassador, "is essential to boost the international projection of our publishing sector, the country's leading creative industry: Italy's economic growth also depends, today more than ever, on the support of the diplomatic-consular network to all the operators of the book supply chain in emerging markets, such as Ecuador".
