International and cross-border mobility, border crossings, and wage dumping were among the topics addressed during an official meeting of the Italian Ambassador to Switzerland Gian Lorenzo Cornado and the Consul General of Italy in Lugano Gabriele Meucci with the President of the Grand Council (Parliament) of the Canton of Ticino Michele Guerra and a delegation from the presidential office.
The visit, which took place yesterday in Bellinzona at the Palazzo delle Orsoline, is part of "the meetings promoted by the President of the Grand Council aimed at tackling a number of issues of importance to the citizens of the Canton of Ticino and identifying solutions", a communiqué published by the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino stressed.
After the recent meeting with the authorities of the Lombardy Region on 8 July, an occasion in which the willingness to work together to request the completion of Alptransit and to resolve other critical cross-border issues was established, "today a high representative of the Italian Republic met," the communiqué adds.
The topics touched on were "international and cross-border mobility; with reference to the need for the completion of Alptransit, intermodal mobility and lake transport, the labour market with an emphasis on the issue of border crossings, the traffic caused by them, and wage dumping, which was discussed at length, also in relation to the weight of the entire problem for the citizens of the canton".
In the area of mobility, it was learnt with satisfaction that "in the coming weeks, the cabotage agreement will finally be signed, which will make it possible to expand the cross-border bus network, with the aim of relieving cross-border traffic on Ticino's roads". Finally, Ambassador Cornado and President Guerra agreed on the desirability of greater contact between the Grand Council and the Embassy, in order to directly address the bilateral and more specific issues felt by the population, the communiqué states.
In a message on X, Cornado thanked Guerra and the Deputies of the Grand Council "for their warm welcome and the fruitful talks in our common language under the banner of friendship and cooperation between Italy and Ticino".
The delegation from the Ticino Presidential Office was composed of Daria Lepori, Alessandro Speziali, Claudio Isabella, Stefano Tonini, Tuto Rossi and Samantha Bourgoin.
