With summer in full swing, the
magic word in footwear is options.
Temperatures are soaring to record highs and shoes are
riding low as comfort and ease are the common denominators for a
wide variety of on-trend flats.
Given fashion's current obsession with the 1970s, designers
are using footwear silhouettes to add a key spin to the decade
that has been percolating for several seasons now.
Sliders, multiple variations of the Birkenstock sandal, and
clogs are a must this summer.
These silhouettes perfectly match the glossily updated
versions of 1970s looks, along with the lace-up ballerinas and
gladiator sandals currently striding along sweltering sidewalks
worldwide.
And with denims, broderie anglaise, florals and big hats,
wedge and platform sandals are also a go-to look for this year's
take on the 1970s.
Demure lace-up flats with a subtle point and a ballerina
mood are a key summer item for formalwear at Balenciaga, Bottega
Veneta and Emporio Armani.
Edgardo Osorio's Aquazzura has also fielded versions of
this style - the Belgravia and Christy lace-ups - that have
become an it item this summer and beyond.
Gladiators have also heightened the 1970s mood at Chloe,
whose suede lace-up sandals, either with a flat or wedge heel,
are the shoes to own in summer 2015.
Different versions of this style are on offer from several
top brands.
Valentino's gladiators come with laces riding high just
below the knee and delicate sea element details, as do models
from Michael Kors, Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney to name a
few.
Slides eyeing the 1970s with a modern attitude are another
staple with different versions by Donna Karan, Versace and
Alexander Wang, among others.
There are also fashionable variations on the iconic
Birkenstock sandal, notably seen at Céline, where Phoebe Philo
first revamped the style.
On the heel front, solid platforms are the current way to
go.
Ferragamo, Prada and Saint Laurent have all offered
versions with a high appeal quotient.
Flatforms are also helping channel the 1970s mood at Acne
and MSGM.
Meanwhile, for cooler temperatures, kicks and skater shoes
remain the option.
Trainers are still a huge fashion trend with classics by,
among others, Gucci and Superga, along with the slip-on sneakers
popularized by Céline.
For those willing to make a powerful statement by stepping
onto the androgynous side of the 1970s, derby shoes and lace-up
booties are a must, as seen at Giorgio Armani and Dolce &
Gabbana.
