Amal Clooney was one this year's
recipients of the DVF Leadership Awards set up by veteran
Belgian fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and presented in
Venice Thursday.
George Clooney's human rights lawyer wife got the award for her
defence of the victims of rights abuses worldwide.
Also honoured were: British-Nigerian Amina J.
Mohammed, the
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General; Ecuadorian Helena
Gualinga for her work in defence of the environment and human
rights; Canadian Joy Buolamwini, global expert on the
implications of artificial intelligence; and Indian-Canadian
actress, activist and YouTuber Lilly Singh.
Diane von Furstenberg and The Diller von Furstenberg Family
Foundation set up the DVF Awards over a decade ago to recognise,
support and amplify the voices of extraordinary women who devote
themselves to the improvement of other women's lives.
"My mother taught me that in dark moments you must seek the
light.
These women represent the light, and hope," said the
76-year-old von Furstenberg.
Each of the award recipients will receive a big donation to
support an organization of their choice.
