A temporary exhibition of late
Neapolitan art gallerist Lucio Amelio's 'Terrae Motus'
collection has opened at the Caserta Royal Palace.
In the early 1980s Amelio (1931-1994) asked leading
contemporary artists including Joseph Beuys, Keith Haring,
Jannis Kounellis, Robert Mapplethorpe, Mario Merz, Mimmo
Paladino, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy
Warhol, to produce work in reaction to a November 23, 1980,
earthquake that devastated the southern Basilicata and Campania
regions, killing thousands.
The show toured internationally - including the Boston
Institute of Contemporary Art and the Grand Palais in Paris -
before Amelio bequeathed it to the Caserta Royal Palace just
prior to his death.
Terrae Motus (earthquake in Latin) is made up of 72 pieces,
of which 68 are on show.
