The Carabinieri art squad has
recovered 13 out 14 works by Spanish sculptor Victorio Macho
(1887-1966) that were stolen from a truck the night they arrived
in Rome for an exhibition at the Cervantes Institute last month.
Culture Minister Dario Franceschini has informed his
Spanish counterpart, sources said.
Unknowns absconded with sculptures and drawings by the
early 20th century artist while they were on a truck parked near
the Spanish cultural institute ahead of a show to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of his death.
Macho is considered to be one of the greats of modern
Spanish sculpture, and his home and workshop in Toledo was
converted into a museum after his death. He has been featured on
a postage stamp of Spain.
