Director Paolo Genovese's
Perfetti Sconosciuti (Perfect Strangers) recounting an evening
spent together by longstanding friends and the secrets that
emerge when they begin to share the contents of their mobile
phones won the David di Donatello award for best film on Monday.
Other films to win gongs were Il Racconto dei Racconti -
Tale of Tales by Matteo Garrone (of 'Gomorra' fame) for best
director, and 'Lo Chiamavano Jeeg Robot' by Gabriele Mainetti,
which swept seven awards including best emerging director, best
actor and actress and best supporting actor and actress.
The annual David di Donatello film awards ceremony organised by
the Academy of Italian Cinema (ACI) and this year in its 60th
edition is akin to Italy's Oscars. Earlier in the day
President Sergio Mattarella conferred three special David di
Donatello awards to actress Gina Lollobrigida and directors
Paolo and Vittorio Taviani.
Mattarella called them "symbols of Italian cinema" and
expressed "the country's gratitude" towards them.
