Forty masterpieces by French
impressionist painter Claude Monet from the collection of the
Musée D'Orsay in Paris went on display at Turin's Gallery of
Modern Art on Thursday.
Seven of the paintings are being displayed for the first
time in Italy, including the famous Luncheon on the Grass
portraying a vibrant picnic scene.
The exhibition, which will run until January 31, was
organised thanks to close collaboration between Turin City
Council and the Musée D'Orsay, which already agreed to similar
displays of work by Edgar Degas in 2012 and Pierre-Auguste
Renoir in 2013.
It is curated by Xavier Rey from the Musée d'Orsay, a Monet
specialist, and Virginia Bertone, from the Turin gallery.
The Musée D'Orsay's president Guy Cogeval, who attended the
inauguration ceremony with Turin Mayor Piero Fassino, said that
the collaboration would continue in 2016, with the next
exhibition to showcase masterpieces of Edouard Manet.
