A couple got a surprise wedding present when world-renowned classical tenor Andrea Bocelli sang Franz Schubert's Ave Maria at their church wedding, Genoa daily Il Secolo XIX reported Tuesday.
The couple had chosen to marry in Saint Peter's church at Porto Venere - a seaside town that is part of the UNESCO-designated Cinque Terre riviera in the northwestern Liguria region - where Bocelli happens to be on holiday with his family.
The celebrated tenor sent his wife to ask the church warden's permission before sitting at the organ and intoning Schubert's 1825 classic, surprising the newlyweds and their guests.
