Boosting knowledge and giving new generations a chance to build life-changing experiences are the pillars on which the Venice Biennale has planned upcoming "college" events dedicated to ballet, theater and music across five months, starting on June 25.
The 56th Biennale International Art Exhibition runs from May 9 through November 22 under the banner "All the World's Futures" at various venues in the lagoon city.
The Biennale's College Dance section is scheduled on June 25-28 under the direction of choreographer Virgilio Sieni.
The 43th International Theater Festival will kick off on July 30 through August 9 and is headed by Catalan director Alex Rigola, while the 59th International Festival of Contemporary Music on October 2-11 will focus on the theme of memory under the direction of composer Ivan Fedele.
"The spirit of Biennale College is becoming increasingly significant" and very much "a reference point for dance, theater and music", Biennale President Paolo Baratta told reporters in Rome last week at a presentation of the event.
Baratta said the event focusing on dance, music and theater was something in between "a festival and a campus" to foster "creativity aimed at true artistic creation".
Young artists who have been selected to participate will join training workshops and shows under the guidance of leading artists in all three arts.
The dance events will take place from midday till evening across Venice - from Piazza San Marco to the Arsenale - with the participation of leading choreographers including Laurent Chétouane, Xavier Le Roy, Alessandro Sciarroni, Claudia Castellucci, Cesc Gelabert, Salva Sanchis and Francesca Pennini's Collettivo Cinetico group.
The theater festival will include 13 performances and 18 laboratories with artists such as Thomas Ostermeier, Fabrice Murgia, Falk Richter a Milo Rau, Antonio Latella and the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio to narrate the present through diverse voices.
The idea of memory will be at the center of the music festival with guests ranging from Pierre Boulez and Helmut Lachenmann to the young Nina Senk and Pasquale Corrado. Late composer Giuseppe Sinopoli, who was born in Venice, will be remembered with all College activities focusing on his 1974 opera Souvenir à la mémoire.
The music festival's director, composer Ivan Fedele, stressed that the event "will not talk about the young, we are letting them do the talking and express themselves freely".
A Golden Lion for career achievement will be awarded at the end of each of the three festivals.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will be awarded a Golden Lion for dance, Christoph Mathaler for theater and Georges Aperghis for music.
Spanish company Agrupacion Senor Serrao will get a Silver Lion.
