Winter in Rome will be
brightened by three very diverse art exhibitions in the national
capital, from works by a Mannerist master to film fashion
history to a show of emerging contemporary artists opening this
week.
Rome's Maxxi contemporary art museum, in a week-long show
that opens Thursday, showcases the winners of the sixth edition
of Centro-Periferia, an international competition for emerging
talent.
Italian artist Riccardo Giacconi's video piece 'L'altra
faccia della spirale' and Russian artist Ekaterina Maximova's
photographic piece 'Cloister on the Lake Kenozero in
Archengelsk' were among the winners, and chosen by the
scientific committee of the competition.
The people's jury chose 'Senora ensacada (Bagged lady)',
digital photography by Dominican Republic's Yael Duval and
'Postcards' by Ovidiu Leuce of Romania.
Work will be on display at Maxxi's Corner D space.
Showing contemporaneously at Maxxi is Federica Cellini's
installation Draunara, a sound and photographic narrative
recounting migrant passage from Libya to Lampedusa.
Meanwhile, Rome's National Gallery of Ancient Art at Palazzo
Barberini on Wednesday inaugurated the exhibition 'Daniele da
Volterra and the First Touchstone', following the Mannerist
artist's career from his early days as part of the Sienese
school to his years in Rome with Michelangelo.
Along with da Volterra's pieces, work from his
contemporaries will be on display including several drawn from
the Gallery's warehouse.
This will mark the first in a series of exhibitions that
draws from works held in storage at the Palazzo Barberini.
The Daniela da Volterra exhibition runs through February
28.
On Saturday, Palazzo Braschi will open its 'I vestiti dei
sogni', a show dedicated to costume design from the silver
screen.
The exhibition features film costumes by Italian designers
including Oscar winners Piero Tosi, Danilo Donati, Milena
Canonero and Gabriella Pescucci, and represents all eras of
cinema history from silent films to today.
The exhibition closes on March 22.
