Carabinieri police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing a female university student to death in broad daylight in a Messina street on Monday before numerous witnesses, sources said on Tuesday. The victim was named as Sara Campanella, a 22-year-old from Palermo who was a student at the Messina university nursing sciences faculty.
The sources said the suspect was Stefano Argentino, a 27-year-old man from Noto who was doing the same course as Campanella.
She was killed by a single stab wound to the jugular.
Witnesses said she had been arguing with a young man before she was murdered.
Argentino was tracked down and arrested in a house in his home town, the sources said.
He is thought to have followed Campanella and then walked with her along a short stretch of road before the attack.
Investigators suspect that Argentino had feelings for the victim that were not reciprocated.
Italy has experienced a long series of shocking femicides and episodes of gender-based violence. .
