One of the 49 migrants who were taken
to Albania early on Tuesday by the Italian Navy's Cassiopea
patrol vessel to undergo fast-track border procedures could be
taken back to Italy after his condition was deemed to be
incompatible with detention in the country, well-informed
sources said.
The 49 people are being screened by Italian officials at the
Shengjin hotspot in Albania before their applications can be
reviewed as part of an agreement between Rome and Tirana to
process migrants in Italian-run centres in Albania.
A few migrants who were part of the first two small groups of
asylum seekers to be taken to Albania in October and November
last year were also transferred back to Italy after they were
deemed vulnerable.
