A traffic police commander in Florence
has paid the traffic fine of a former GKN automotive factory
worker near the Tuscan capital who wrote to Mayor Dario Nardella
asking for the 74 euro sanction to be frozen until he had the
means to settle it.
The local municipal police chief said she was thus voicing
solidarity with the Italian workers of the British-based
automotive and aerospace group, who have been laid off and are
trying to repurpose the plant at Campi.
The worker, who has a family with children, told Nardella he had
no liquidity to pay the fine at the moment but did not want to
duck paying it.
The Campi factory was closed in July 2021, leading to a long
labour dispute.
Its workers had benefitted from a government lay-off fund until
the end of last year but are now without any income.
The fine was issued on January 6 when the man, who was
distracted, drove into a bus lane in Florence.
The commander explained to the man that the fine could not be
frozen and proceeded to pay it out her won pocket "as a mark of
solidarity with the cause" of the GKN workers, which "can only
see the participation of all of Florence and its citizens".
The worker replied to the woman that he would pay her back "the
loan, from a friend to a friend".
