A Puglia priest who hit the headlines
after turning his sacresty into a kitchen a few months ago has
not started preaching the Gospel in a local gym wearing a
tracksuit and trainers instead of his clerical garb.
Don Michele Schiavone, priest at the San Pio di Margherita di
Savoia, north of Bari, says this way he can convey that "the
word of God is not abstract, is not far from us but is our
reference point, it is the medicine the Lord gives us to face
daily life".
He told ANSA: "Last night we had the first experience of
catechesis amidst weights and treadmills, and we read a nice
phrase from the Letter to the Jews saying 'you prepared my
body'.
"In the end the youngsters realised that the Gospel stresses the
importance of focusing on the body God gave us".
