A Florence judge on Monday acquitted
three members of the Ultima Generazione (UG - Last Generation)
group who glued themselves to the protective screen of Sandro
Botticelli's Primavera in the Uffizi Gallery in July 2002 in
order to highlight the need take action to address the climate
crisis.
The preliminary hearings judge ruled that a criminal act had not
taken place.
The stunt is part of a long series of controversial acts of
civil disobedience the group has staged to draw attention to the
climate emergency, including blocking roads and pouring
easy-to-wash-off paint over the protective shields of artworks
and famous monuments.
"According to the judge, gluing yourself to the protective glass
of Botticelli's Primavera is not a deed worthy of a
conviction," UG said.
"This relieves us but it does not console us.
"The government is still not committed to make people safe from
the climate crisis".
