People in eight towns near to Rome
were told on Wednesday by Lazio Governor Francesco Rocca to keep
their windows closed after a fire at a waste-storage facility at
Ciampino in Saturday.
The towns are Marino, Albano, Grottaferrata, Castel Gandolfo,
Ariccia, Lanuvio and Frascati, in addition to Ciampino itself.
People have also told to limit their movements and the use of
air conditioning and to wash fruit and vegetables.
The measures do not regard Rome.
Ciampino is home to Rome's second airport but the fire did not
affect services.
Dioxin levels in the air rose above the legal threshold after
the fire, according to monitoring by the region's environmental
agency, Arpa Lazio.
