A former city councillor for the
rightwing League party in the northern city of Verona was
acquitted Friday after making a Fascist salute to greet Me Too
activists during a council meeting in 2018.
The man, Andrea Bacciga, was cleared of the crime of 'apology of
Fascism'.
Bacciga made the gesture at the Me Too group who had come into
the council chamber dressed in Handmaid's Tale garb to protest
anti-abortion moves.
The acquittal was met with dismay by partisans group ANPI and
WWII death camp deported group ANED, which said "you can't
really be amazed at this acquittal in a city in which just a
month ago (far right group) Forza Nuova's Luca Castellini was
cleared after dedicating a celebration of (local soccer club)
Hellas Verona to Adolf Hitler, and if a 'friendly' Roman salute
is considered on a par with 'hello', ciao, a sparring between
friends and enemies?".
