All six defendants charged with culpable disaster and multiple manslaughter in the August 24, 2016 earthquake-caused collapse of a building in the Lazio town of Amatrice were acquitted on Wednesday.
The collapse which caused seven deaths, happened in the centre
of the town after the devastating quake centred on Amatrice and
nearby Accumoli.
Among those acquitted by a judge in Rieti was the former mayor
of Amatrice, Sergio Pirozzi, currently a regional councillor for
the rightwing League party.
The others cleared were: Ivo Carloni, Giovanni Conti, Maurizio
Scacchi, Valerio Lucarelli and Gianfranco Salvatore.
