A man who was arrested Wednesday
after driving his car into a northern Italian river and drowning
his wife said he had dome so because she had told him she was
planning to leave him.
Carlo Fumagalli, 49, has been charged with aggravated murder
after the woman, Romina Vento, 44, was found in the couple's
submerged Renault Megane station wagon in the Adda River at Fara
Gera d'Adda near Bergamo.
Fumagalli said he had wanted to drown himself too but had
inadvertently survived.
His lawyer said he had come off his psychiatric medication five
weeks ago.
Fumagalli tried to use a jail window sash to hang himself in his
cell Thursday night, and has therefore been taken to hospital.
