A famed Sicilian white marn cliff
mentioned in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano novels was
vandalised with red powder at the weekend.
Inspections showed that the powder used at the Scala di Turchi
(Stair of the Turks) cliff was made of ferrous oxide.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for staining the site,
which has applied for UNESCO world heritage status.
The stains have now been washed off.
The beauty spot takes its names from the incursions of Saracen
and Barbary raiders, or 'Turks', in Sicily from the Middle Ages
onwards.
