Italy's Ambassador to Pakistan at
the weekend confirmed that Italian mountaineer Daniele Nardi and
his British climbing partner Tom Ballard have died on Nanga
Parbat, the world's ninth-tallest mountain.
Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo said two bodies spotted on the
mountain had been identified as those of Nardi and Ballard.
For the moment, the corpses are set to remain in the mountain
as it is too dangerous to try to recover them.
Nardi, from Sezze, near Latina, south of Rome, and Ballard, a
Scot, had last been heard from on February 24.
The mission to try to save them was called off last week.
The pair had been attempting a rare winter ascent of the
mountain.
