A total of 26 prison sentences
were handed down Monday in an international drug trafficking
trial that saw an ex-model and ex-gangster moll among its
defendants.
An investigation dubbed 'Dexter' had uncovered a cocaine
and hashish trade from Holland and North Africa to Milan and
Monza, netting 31 arrests - including 21 Italians and 10
Albanians - in April this year.
Among them was 67-year-old Carla Martelli, the former
girlfriend of Pino Di Girolamo, a member of the notorious Renato
Vallanzasca gang.
The latter was a powerful figure in the Milanese
underworld who is now serving four consecutive life sentences
plus 290 years for a string of robberies, kidnappings, and
murders. He also inspired a 2010 movie directed by Michele
Placido and starring Kim Rossi Stuart.
In court today, 14 of the defendants got sentences of up to
nine years in prison, with Martelli being handed six years.
Another 12 defendants pled out.
