Consumer group Altroconsumo said
Friday over 103,000 Italian citizens have already signed its
online petition, launched Thursday, to ask the government to
restore a discount on petrol and diesel duty and to cancel value
added tax (VAT) on motor vehicle fuels in order to curb recent
"unacceptable" price hikes in Italy.
It accused the government of adopting "bland" measures such as
getting petrol stations to display the average regional prices
of petrol and diesel at their pumps.
"As was widely predictable, this has proven wholly ineffective,"
said Altroconsumo.
Altroconsumo said the the excise discount, in force until the
start of this year but not renewed by the Meloni government
which cited different priorities, had "given motorists a bit of
relief".
But even that measure would not be "decisive" like cancelling
VAT, said the consumer group.
