Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags
in the face of the riders near the end of the sixth stage of the
Giro d'Italia Thursday, the longest this year at 277 km from
Potenza to Naples.
Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said the southern city had
historic ties to cycling.
"It's a great emotion. It's the fourth consecutive time that the
Giro arrives in Naples in such a beautiful setting. Naples has
always had a strong relationship with cycling, a historic
relationship, there are so many fans here and many have been
along the route and participated in the activities connected to
the stage.
"I believe that cycling is still a great sport of effort,
suffering and individual commitment - he added - and it carries
forward the best values ;;of sport. We need healthy sport that
helps young people in particular to grow in the values ;;and
principles of fair and honest competition".
