Premier Giorgia Meloni paid tribute to
former Italian premier Aldo Moro on the 47th anniversary of his
murder by Red Brigades terrorists on Friday, Italy's Day of
Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism.
She also remembered Sicilian anti-Mafia activist Peppino
Impastato, who was killed by Cosa Nostra on the same day, May 9,
1978.
"Today we remember Aldo Moro and Peppino Impastato, two
different figures who marked the recent history of Italy and
were united by a tragic destiny," Meloni said via social media.
"On May 9, 1978, they lost their lives at the hands of two of
the dark forces - the Red Brigades and Cosa Nostra - that
bloodied our nation in the dark years of terrorism and Mafia.
"Aldo Moro, a man of the institutions, was kidnapped and killed
by those who wanted to make the State bend with violence and
ideological intolerance.
"Peppino Impastato was murdered for having denounced and
challenged the Mafia's power openly and without fear.
"They are two symbols, fallen in the midst of those 'years of
lead' that scarred Italy with the blood of too many innocent
people: servants of the State, representatives of the
institutions, citizens, young people with different political
ideas.
"On the Day of Remembrance dedicated to the victims of
terrorism, we renew our commitment to defend freedom, justice
and legality.
"Their legacy reminds us that Italy does not bow before those
who sow death and fear.
"We honor their sacrifice, building a stronger, more united and
free nation every day.
"No to political violence, of any color, and to mafia
oppression".
