The government's decision to abolish
the crime of abuse of office is not unconstitutional, the
Constitutional Court said on Thursday.
The court said objections raised by 14 judicial authorities
regarding the constitutionality of the move were inadmissible
and rejected others regarding its compatibility with United
Nations Convention against Corruption.
The court will release the reasoning behind its ruling in the
coming weeks.
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said the crime of abuse of office
was too vague and discouraged local politicians and civil
servants from signing off on projects due to fears they will end
up under investigation for it, thus causing "economic damage
that affects citizens".
