Israel honours late Pope Francis,
Ambassador to the Holy See Yaron Sideman told ANSA Thursday
saying he would attend his funeral even though it will be on the
Sabbath Saturday.
"As Ambassador of Israel to the Holy See, I officially represent
my country at the funeral of Pope Francis," Sideman said.
"Since it will be held on Saturday, Israel attaches great
importance to expressing its condolences and joining the
Catholic world in mourning the passing of the Pontiff.
"Normally, official representatives of the State of Israel are
prohibited from participating in formal activities on Saturday.
"In this case, an exception was granted because of its
importance.
"The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, expressed condolences on
behalf of the State of Israel".
Israel caused a stir when a papal condolence post was deleted
from the foreign ministry's X account and Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu has been urged to send a message despite
recent differences over Gaza.
