The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has recognized Italy's responsibility in the violation of the right to health and medical treatment of Simone Niort, a 27-year-old man with a psychiatric condition who attempted to commit suicide 20 times during his eight-year-long detention in an Italian prison, the chair of penal human rights group Antigone, Patrizio Gonnella, said on Friday.
Niort also repeatedly tried to hurt himself during his time in prison, said Gonnella.
"The court believes that national authorities did not prove they
evaluated in a sufficiently rigorous manner the compatibility of
his state of health with detention" and did not take action to
transfer Niort to a "penitentiary facility that was more suited
to his grave condition", said his attorney Antonella Calcaterra.
