Italy's Federica Brignone on Sunday
paid homage to Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami after the Swiss
pipped her to the World Cup SuperG title by dominating the last
race of the season ahead of American legend Lindsey Vonn, who
came second, and the Italian, third.
The 34-year-old from Val d'Aista said she was now focusing on
the last giant slalom of the season on Tuesday, hoping to take
her title haul to three.
"Today Lara did another sport" said Brignone, acknowledging the
great performance of Gut Behrami that prevented her from also
winning the super-G cup after the overall title, her second
after 2020's, and the downhill title, both won mathematically
after Saturday's last downhill at Sun Valley was cancelled due
to heavy snow.
"It was a super-G that suited her characteristics very well.
Even mine, in a certain sense - added the Italian - but some
corrections had to be made. I made a mistake halfway and there I
had already crossed the finish line. Vonn's podium is something
sensational. I don't think anyone skied very well today, Gut
aside, while she managed to put all the pieces together and was
good. I should have done something special to beat Lara, instead
I was in difficulty with both the layout, with very narrow
links, and the track, a bit particular, and the snow, which was
constantly changing".
"However - Federica concluded - the mistakes were mine, I was
the one who didn't interpret the race in the right way".
But "now I'm thinking about Tuesday's giant slalom and I'll need
to ski like I've done all winter, otherwise I won't have a
chance".
