Former Italian prime minister and ex
European Commission president Romano Prodi on Wednesday said a
proposed ReArm plan launched by European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen to boost Europe's defence capabilities
needs to be a first step towards a European government.
"It makes no sense to arm ourselves without a unitary policy"
and "thus this must be a first step towards a European
government including in its functions defence, like all
governments around the world", said Prodi, who gave a speech on
the 'Present and future of Europe' at the University of Florence
Wednesday.
"We must not think that this can replace the future job of
having a real European government", Prodi concluded.
