A reported 93 migrants have landed on
the Sicilian island of Lampedusa between Tuesday night and
Wednesday morning, local authorities have said.
The new arrivals included a group 55 people from Bangladesh,
Eritrea, Nigeria, Pakistan and Sudan who were rescued on a
rubber dinghy in the Strait of Sicily by the NGO-run
migrant-rescue vessel Trotamar III.
Some of the passengers, including a minor, said they had
departed from Zuwara in Libya and had paid around 2,000 dollars
each for the trip.
All new arrivals have been taken to the local hotspot in the
island's the Imbriacola district, which is currently hosting 103
people.
About 3,329 people disembarked on Italy's coasts in February
2025, down 4% on the previous month, according to the UN Refugee
Agency UNHCR.
But overall, since the beginning of the year, arrivals have
increased by 49% compared to the equivalent period in 2024,
according to the data.
Approximately 84% of those who arrived in February disembarked
on Lampedusa, the UN agency said.
