Keir Starmer said he was fully in tune
with Giorgia Meloni on the importance of keeping ties with the
United states strong after the British and Italian prime
ministers met ahead of Sunday's London summit on Ukraine and
European defence.
Starmer and Meloni are in full agreement "on the importance of
the transatlantic alliance" between Europe and the US in the
face of "the common challenges" of the present time, said a note
released by Downing Street after the bilateral meeting between
the prime ministers of Italy and the United Kingdom, which took
place before the 16-nation summit on Ukraine and European
security underway in London.
The meeting was described as "warm and constructive" by London,
which recalled that the leaders had now reached their third
face-to-face meeting since July.
The shared "support for Ukraine for as long as necessary" in
response to the Russian invasion was also reiterated.
Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron put to the summit a
Franco-British plan for a coalition of the willing to lend Kyiv
security guarantees.
