An inmates hanged himself in his cell
at Cremona Prison Monday morning bringing Italy's prison suicide
toll this year to 14, the UILPA warders' union said.
A prison operator has also taken his own life this year, UILPA
noted.
Chronic overcrowding and poor conditions have been linked to the
rising jail suicide rate.
"We are clearly facing a carnage to which, in fact, no effective
barrier has been put in place and which bears witness even more,
if there were any need, to the dramatic nature of the
penitentiary emergency", said Gennarino De Fazio, general
secretary of the UILPA Penitentiary Police union.
